LINEAGE & HISTORY OF A LUGO FAMILY
Origin Gallego
Lugo of Latin "lucus", " sacred forrest".
Coat of Arms
Originated in Madrid and Canary Islands. In gules (red), of sinople (green), angulada flordelisada, full a cross of four ears, gold (origin ASTURIAS, Spain). Descendant of King D. Fruela I, by his grandson Count D. Rodrigo Romaes. A branch transcended to the conquest of the Canary Islands, where it was domiciled. Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, the 'Adelantado', Commander of the Army, planted a wooden cross on the shore. A mass was celebrated, and following the festivity of the day ('The Holy Cross'), a town was founded under the name 'Holy Cross of Tenerife' (Santa Cruz de Tenerife). The cross in the arms is thus a canting symbol for this occasion.
